Bioengineering

Jervaughn Hunter
I first became fascinated with health and science when my father used to tutor my younger sister and I on the banks of the Mississippi River in my small hometown - Port Gibson, Mississippi. Growing up in this small town, I knew opportunities would be limited so I was emboldened to seek out ways to further my education. Because of the investment and support that my family, friends, and community members provided to me during my childhood and the growing need for healthcare and educational reform I noticed in my community, I decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). As an undergrad, I got involved with many organizations such as the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., TRIO Academic Services (TAS), and Blazer Male Excellency Network (BMEN) to help further give back to the community through mentorship, health awareness workshops, and many other initiatives.
