Andres J. Nevarez is a Ph.D. candidate in biology at the University of California, San Diego researching at the intersection of cancer biology and artificial intelligence. His work focuses on quantitative cell imaging to unravel the metastatic single-cell state towards early identification of metastasis, the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Andres is an HHMI Gilliam, NAS Ford, and F31 diversity supplement fellow. Andres has received awards for his outstanding mentorship and scholarly activity. Andres received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from California State University, Fresno, where he was a McNair and Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) scholar. Andres has dedicated much of his academic career to creating growth opportunities for historically excluded individuals. Andres has led three Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) chapters across the United States. Andres is a principal member of the Delta Alpha Pi (DAPi) Honor Society for students with disabilities and the Diversity and Science Lecture Series (DASL). Through these endeavors, he reaches his community with outreach activities to middle-school-age children to community college transfer students. Andres aspires to conduct research and to engage historically excluded students in cutting-edge quantitative biology technologies in his laboratory.
