Public Health (Epidemiology)

Hannah Battey
Hannah Battey is a second-year PhD student in the Public Health (Epidemiology) program. She holds a B.S. in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a M.S. in Human Biology from the University of Copenhagen. With a deep passion for infectious disease epidemiology, Hannah is committed to leveraging her interdisciplinary background in biological sciences to drive advancements in this critical field. Prior to her doctoral studies, Hannah spent 1.5 years at the Statens Serum Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, where she contributed to the development of an improved tuberculosis vaccination strategy. This initiative was notably successful, with the vaccine now in human trials in South Africa. Additionally, she worked for four years as an Infection Preventionist at a comprehensive cancer center in Los Angeles County during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on safeguarding immunocompromised patients from hospital-acquired infections. Currently, as a SDSU University Graduate Fellow at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology, Hannah combines her expertise in immunology, epidemiology, and bioinformatics to explore new bacterial T cell epitopes in the lab of Dr. Bjoern Peters at the Center for Infectious Disease and Vaccine Research. Her PhD research aims to enhance our understanding of the leading bacterial pathogens responsible for community-acquired pneumonia. Hannah is focused on developing real-world solutions to tackle infectious diseases, with a keen interest in diagnostics and vaccines.
