Second Masters Degree

The Graduate Council has revisited the subject of awarding a 2nd Master's degree to a student. The General Catalog states: "Normally, duplication of advanced degrees is not permitted." The Council has reaffirmed that statement with a few exceptions: a degree in a different field,e.g., sociology and engineering; retraining in a related field.

On occasion a student admitted to the Ph.D. but leaving with a terminal masters may be granted a 2nd masters degree if the department can justify the differences of a related field. Students admitted for a Ph.D. with a master's degree will not be awarded a 2nd masters' degree in the same general field. Any requests submitted must contain a justification and comparison of the degree work.
