Academic Student Employees
SALARY
Teaching Assistants and Associates receive three equal paychecks per quarter. Fall quarter paychecks are issued on 11/1, 12/1 and 1/1; winter quarter checks on 2/1, 3/1 and 4/1; and spring quarter checks on 5/1, 6/1 and 7/1. Monthly salary is determined by multiplying the 100% monthly salary rate by the appointment percent time.
Readers and Tutors are positive-time employees and must report hours worked in Ecotime to be paid.
Student Academic Title Pay Rates
FEE PAYMENTS
Fee Payment Information for Academic Student Employees
Students covered by the Graduate Funding Reform who are appointed as an academic graduate student title (i.e. GSR, IA, or combination of GSR and IA appointments) at 25% for the entire quarter are eligible to have their Resident Tuition and Fees and Mandatory Health Insurance covered. Nonresident supplemental tuition will be automatically covered for international students; NRST will be automatically covered for domestic students in their first year of enrollment.
Students not covered by the Graduate Funding Reform
- who are appointed as in the academic graduate student title GSR, or a combination of GSR appointments at 25% for the entire quarter are eligible to have their Resident Tuition and Fees and Mandatory Health Insurance covered. Nonresident supplemental tuition will be automatically covered for international students; NRST will be automatically covered for domestic students in their first year of enrollment.
- with an academic graduate student title IA appointment, or multiple IA appointments, that total 25% or more are eligible for the ASE Partial Fee Remission. The ASE Partial Fee Remission automatically includes tuition, student services fee, $100 towards campus fees, and mandatory health insurance.
Fee coverage for Students not covered by the Graduate Funding Reform with both GSR and IA appointments differs based on the percentage of effort of the two appointments. Students are encouraged to connect with their hiring departments for full details.
Graduate Student Researchers
SALARY AND FEE PAYMENTS
Graduate Student Researchers are paid once a month on the first day of the month following the beginning of the term of appointment. Monthly salary is determined by multiplying the 100% monthly salary rate by the appointment percent time. Graduate Student Researchers employed 25% or more for the quarter are eligible to have their tuition and fees paid under the Graduate Student Researcher Tuition/Fee Remission program which includes: Student Services Fee, Tuition, Graduate Student Association Fee, University Center Fee, RIMAC Recreation Facility Fee, Canyonview Recreation Facility Fee, CAPS/Student Mental Health Fee, Student Transportation Fee, Health insurance and Nonresident Supplemental Tuition (if applicable). It excludes any professional or program fees.
NOTE: For Non Resident Supplemental Tuition remission, students must be within the first year of graduate study at UC San Diego unless an international student. US citizens and permanent residents should establish California residency by the start of their second year.

Students appointed as Associates, Teaching Assistants, and Graduate Student Researchers are salaried and do not report hours worked in Ecotime. Readers and Tutors are positive-time employees and must report hours worked in Ecotime to be paid.
