Pre-Candidacy

Pre-candidacy represents the first stage of a graduate student's career. All academic activities should be planned with the advice of the faculty advisor.

  • Fulfill residency requirements
  • Fulfill departmental course requirements
  • Satisfy any foreign language requirement
  • Take and pass preliminary exams if required

Plan I Master's Thesis Students

Identify thesis committee members and submit a committee constitution form on-line. The committee constitution form must be submitted to and approved at least two weeks before a thesis defense is scheduled. Students should work with their graduate coordinator to submit the on-line form.   • Submit the Application for Candidacy for the Thesis or Comprehensive Examination, Plan I or II, for the Degree of Master of Arts or Science* form to the Graduate Division (form is obtained from the graduate coordinator).
  • The Application for Candidacy must be filed with the Graduate Division within the first 2 weeks of the quarter in which the degree requirements are to be completed. Ideally, the Application is filed when the student is registered in the last of the program’s core courses. 

*The following programs have been approved to submit the application for candidacy using the Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS) in TritonLink (by Fall 2015 all Masters applications should be able to submit via the DARS): Bioengineering, Economics, Linguistics, Materials Science, and Psychology

Plan II Master's Comprehensive Exam Students

Submit the Application for Candidacy for the Thesis or Comprehensive Examination, Plan I or II, for the Degree of Master of Arts or Science form to the Graduate Division (form is obtained from the graduate coordinator).

The Application for Candidacy must be filed with the Graduate Division within the first 2 weeks of the quarter in which the degree requirements are to be completed. Ideally, the Application is filed when the student is registered in the last of the program’s core courses.

Plan III Master of Fine Arts Students

Identify thesis committee members and submit a committee constitution form on-line.  Students should work with their graduate coordinator to submit the on-line form. Graduate Coordinators access the on-line committee tool at https://goapp.ucsd.edu/committee/login.php.

  • Submit the Application for Candidacy for the Modified Thesis, Plan III, for the Degree of Master of Fine Arts form to the Graduate Division (form is obtained from the graduate coordinator).
  • The Application for Candidacy must be filed with the Graduate Division within the first 2 weeks of the quarter in which the degree requirements are to be completed. Ideally, the Application is filed when the student is registered in the last of the program’s core courses.

Doctoral Students

Identify Qualifying Exam committee members and submit a committee constitution form on-line.  Students should work with their graduate coordinator to submit the on-line form. Graduate Coordinators access the on-line committee tool at https://goapp.ucsd.edu/committee/login.php.

  • Committee constitution form must be submitted to and approved by the Dean of the Graduate Division at least two weeks before the Qualifying Exam takes place. (See http://grad.ucsd.edu/resources/general/doctoral-committee.html for committee composition rules)
  • Complete any program requirements before the Qualifying Exam
  • Prior to the Qualifying Exam obtain the Report of the Qualifying Examination and Advancement to Candidacy for the Doctoral Degree form (obtained from the graduate coordinator). The form must be at the exam and must be signed by all committee members.
