UC LEADS Application FAQ

The application deadline is 4:00pm on Friday, February 16.  Please have all materials submitted on time.  Complete applications include the following: 

  • Completed online application
  • 1 Letter of Recommendation (Form)
  • Copy of transcript (TritonLink printout)
  • Copy of your financial aid award letter (TritonLink printout)

Are the application materials also due on the deadline?

Yes.  Please have the letter of recommendation, copy of your unofficial transcript,and copy of your financial aid award letter submitted by the deadline.

How should I submit application materials?

You can submit application materials electronically or through mail.  

To submit electronically, please send digital copies to w3thompson@ucsd.edu.

To submit paper documents, please use the address below.  If mailing within UC San Diego, postage is not necessary.

Who should write my letter of recommendation?

Your recommender should be someone that can speak about your capacity for academic excellence and, if possible, your other strong qualities outside of an academic setting.  This may be a professor/faculty member (best), instructor, supervisor, or mentor.  Consider all your options and select a recommender who will write the strongest letter possible.

What happens after I submit my application?

Interviews are the next stage of the application process.  All applicants will be informed if they have advanced to interviews, scheduled on February 27 through March 8.  Notices to join or be waitlisted to UC LEADS will be sent on April 5.

What makes an ideal UC LEADS candidate

An ideal UC LEADS candidate has the following qualities:

  • UC San Diego student in a STEM major
  • Graduating in 6 quarters (Spring 2019)
  • Interested in pursuing a PhD
  • Enjoys research
  • Competitive GPA
