Student Health Services and Insurance Plan

Student Health Service

The Student Health Service (SHS) is a nationally accredited health care facility providing primary health care for no or minimal charge during the academic year for all students who pay the university registration fee. Access to SHS during the summer is also available. Information on the wide variety of services available at SHS, including costs, is available on the SHS Website.

Student Health Insurance Plan

The UC Regents made health insurance a mandatory non-academic condition for enrollment. To ensure that all students have adequate health care coverage, including ongoing primary and specialty care, and to satisfy the mandatory health insurance requirement, UCSD automatically enrolls all registered students into the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).

Each quarter that you enroll in classes at UCSD, your student billing account is automatically charged the fee for the SHIP. The fee will appear on your e-bill statement as a separate charge. If you are already covered by another insurance plan and wish to opt out of the SHIP and have the SHIP fee waived, you must apply for a Health Fee Waiver. The SHIP is a comprehensive health plan that provide a full range of medical services, including in/out patient services, specialty care, emergency care, hospitalization and mental health care, as well as pharmacy, dental and vision coverage. SHS provides primary health care to all students with SHIP. Access to SHIP benefits requires written SHS referral except in cases of emergency and urgent care.
